BHEA: Quick News
Members,
Today, the 22nd of August 2019, Dane Tippman signed the BHEA CBA at the District Office as the President, and Robert Bautista signed on behalf of the Negotiation Team. Alan Nidiffer, School Board Chair, signed the CBA as well. Vice-Chair Jay Trost was reportedly out of town. Until we have his signature and I learn more from the District, we do not yet have a fully agreed-upon CBA.
Additionally, last night on the 21st of August 2019, the School Board announced the hiring of Chris Eberhardt as the Interim Superintendent. Please reach out to Dane Tippman if you would like to know more about this.

BHEA: Standing in Solidarity with DNTA
On the 22nd of August 2019, Some of our BHEA Members joined our colleagues of the Del Norte Teacher's Association in speaking to the School Board of the Del Norte Unified School District. We stand in solidarity with our friends in education, and with our fellow Unions, in asking for fair treatment and a fair wage! Look forward to a link to the Triplicate/Pilot for more information in the near future.

BHEA: Great May 8th, Student Success Act Passes
Members,
I am tremendously heartened by the sheer number of folks wearing Red every Wednesday, and particularly on May 8th. It was incredible to see how many of us chose to come out on our breaks, hold signs, wave at drivers, and talk about the issues.
You need to know that the Student Success Act passed the Oregon Senate. This was a major step that I sincerely believe was deeply affected by the turnout of people across our state. Our own actions down here in Brookings ensured that the critical issues facing education in this state are known and taken seriously all the way down here in the southwesternmost corner of Oregon.
I look forward to anyone who would like to continue to join me in wearing Red on Wednesdays.
If you haven't yet, please check out Matthew Brock's article about our May 8th action.

BHEA: Avoid Sales, Trades at School
Members,
I want to encourage you to be cautious when using the school e-mail system, or the school's Billboards, or school hallways or any other part of school property to buy or sell items, or to promote specific businesses or organizations. Using your position as a school employee for financial gain, or to avoid financial detriment, could be a violation of Oregon ethics laws.
If you're not sure if posting a flier or sending an e-mail advertisement might constitute an ethics violation, please check with a building representative or one of our Officers.
We will reach out to you ourselves if we see behavior that we think might get you in trouble. We want to protect you, and that means telling you when we think an action might be considered unethical under school policy or Oregon law.
Some examples of activities that I encourage you not to take on school grounds, or using school e-mail, because they could be seen as using your position unethically:
Using the school e-mail system to advertise that you are selling items.
Asking for donations to a crowdfunding effort.
Hanging up a poster for a play, concert or other event that is unaffiliated with the school.
Setting up a donation jar for a personal cause in a faculty break room.
Selling homemade or homegrown products to colleagues over e-mail (eggs, cookies, etc)
Taking items out of the school trash, or school recyclables boxes for your own use (bottles, newspaper)
Placing fliers for a business in staff mailboxes because you like that business, or because they give a good deal to school staff, or any other reason.
Confronting possible ethics violations is not a comfortable topic, and sometimes makes a person feel persecuted.
I believe that you would rather be politely taken aside by a colleague then placed under investigation for an ethics violation.
Please reach out to me by e-mail if you have any questions about this matter.

BHEA: March for our Students
Members,
We've been seeing local news coverage of our activities lately, links below to two Curry Coastal Pilot articles. For those who weren't aware, members of our local participated in the 18 February 2019 March For Our Students. I, Dane Tippman, also attended following a vote affirming that I ought to attend. You can see a few pictures of our participation in the event below.

http://www.currypilot.com/news/localnews/7005415-151/merkley-offers-plan-to-reduce-class-sizes
Many of our members are also wearing 'Red for Ed' on Wednesdays. The Red for Ed slogan and the practice of wearing red clothing on Wednesdays and at events and activities has its history in the NEA, the parent organization of the OEA, of which the BHEA is a member. It's likely that NEA began Red for Ed in the first place. As with any movement or slogan, what it becomes is sometimes different from what it was when it started, so please feel free to look into Red for Ed if you're curious about it, or about whether you'd like to participate. I wear Red for Ed on Wednesdays for my own personal and professional reasons, and you're free to join me for your own. Here are some articles about Red for Ed, one by our own former Pilot reporter Jayati Ramakrishnan.

Remember, if you're a member that would like to get involved in the work that we do, please reach out to us. Come to meetings, swing by my classroom and talk to me, e-mail me, or call me.
